Establishment

The Uva Wellassa University (UWU) was established as the 14th National University of Sri Lanka, on June 1, 2005, with the aim of bridging the incompatibility gap between the employment criteria and the graduate output. The UWU was designed as an entrepreneurial university to produce graduates capable of using scientific, technological and entrepreneurial knowledge to contribute to the development of the country.

The UWU is located on a magnificent mountainous site in Badulla with spectacular panoramic view and spreads across 64 acres of land. The UWU has four faculties and offers 16 undergraduate degree programmes catering to the local and global needs. All academic programmes of the UWU are aimed at producing well-rounded and employable graduates, with the attitudes, skills and knowledge necessary to make an outstanding contribution for the sustainable development of the country. As an entrepreneurial university, we would like to see our graduates as job providers rather than job seekers. The students and staff at the UWU have a one-family mindset. Respect & Tolerance, Goal Orientation, Equal Opportunity, Discipline and Entrepreneurship are the core values in the family.

During the short period of existence, the university has proved that the graduates are of exceptional quality, and the high employability rates of graduates are clear evidence of it. The UWU will become one of the Centers of Excellence for Value Addition respected.
